    Cone-beam computed tomography, or CBCT, uses X-rays to produce a three-dimensional view of the teeth, jawbone, and nearby structures. It is different from MRI, which does not use X-rays.

    The machine rotates around the head while collecting images. These images can help the dentist assess bone and anatomical landmarks when planning dental implants or other selected treatments.

    CBCT is used when the additional information is needed for a clinical decision. It usually involves more radiation than conventional dental X-rays, so the scan should be justified for the individual patient.
