    Periodontal disease affects the gums and tissues that support teeth. It can begin with inflammation and bleeding and may progress to damage of the supporting bone.

    When support is lost, teeth can become loose. The condition may progress without obvious pain, so an examination is important even when symptoms seem mild.

    Treatment aims to control infection and protect the remaining support. Depending on the findings, care may include professional cleaning, scaling and root planing, maintenance, or selected surgical treatment. An individual schedule is more appropriate than assuming every patient needs the same six-month interval.
