    A root canal treats the inside of a tooth when its pulp tissue is infected or irreversibly damaged. This can happen in a tooth affected by deep decay, injury, or a significant crack.

    During treatment, the dentist removes the affected tissue, cleans and disinfects the root canals, and fills and seals the space. The aim is to treat the infection while keeping a tooth that can still be restored.

    The tooth then needs an appropriate final restoration, which may include a crown. An examination helps determine whether root canal treatment is suitable and what care is needed afterward.
